Westward Expansion impacted many different social groups. Women were just one of them. You have to realize that men weren't the only ones living in the 1800s. Back then, though, women weren't considered equal to men. In the time of westward expansion, if the men decided to move, their wives would of course go with them. It doesn't seem as thought they had a choice or not. If their husband, brother, or dad said they were moving, they would have to move too. It didn't really matter if they wanted to or not. They would have to leave their friends, their home, and sometimes part of their family.
Traveling
When it came to traveling, women didn't just sit around. They actually helped a lot. While the men were mapping out where they were going and how they were going to get there, who of you think was getting everything in order and packing the supplies? Okay they weren't involved in planning the journey, but so what? They prepared everything that would be essential for the trip. They also really helped when it was time to actually start traveling. Families consist of more than just a husband and a wife, there are children too. Who do you think took care of them? They did a lot more than this, though. Traveling a long distance on dangerous trails forced women to step up. They had to take on some of the responsibilities that the men had. Especially when it came to the time of the California Gold Rush. Men weren't the only ones searching for gold. Many women wanted to find some as well.
